To make ship "green" is not only ensure ecologycal operation of the ship on sea, but also to be conscious about the life cycle of the ship, from the design, through building, sea operation to the scrapping of the ship. The aproach to ship ecology need to be more comprehensive. To ensure these we aim to comply with not only all mandatory MARPOL requirements but also with requirements of environmental class notations eg. The Clean and Clean Design notations of DNV GL.

Technology used on ship mostly aim to limit the usage of fossil fuels as it is the main source of pollution.

Diesel-electric power system give opportunity to optimise the fuel consumption which is ecological and economical. Generators load is fairly constant so it can be design to match requirements of power and low fuel consuption. To achive that in constantly changing sea operation would be more difficult.

During anchoring there is also a need of power. The ventilation, fresh water supply, radio connection or other essential or more basic equipment need working generator. The use of photovoltaic panels lower the demand from diesel generator and in some cases make possible work without it.

There are also other subjects to protection.

The ballast water treatment reduces the exchange of life forms between sailing points which protects local ecosystems. Sea water during pumping and discharging is treated with UV light and filtrated or there can be addons in form of chlorine oxides or other pathogens killer. It’s depending on chosen system.

Oily bilge water filter protects from the oil spillage. Oil from various of equipment on ship is filtraded from bilge water and is stored in tank. Thanks to that, in case of emergency discharging of water from machinery rooms, there is much less oil that get to sea.

The propeller shaft need to be lubricated. The lubricating agent has to be under pressure to balance the water pressure from outside. It frequently ended with oil in water. The use of water to lubricate limits the spilage in this case to zero.

The gen-sets have the cooling system that transfer the heat to the sea or the heat can be used in water evaporators to make freshwater from seawater. The heat can be used also in other appliances.The paint used to protect the ship surfaces is environmental friendly.

The constant sound from working generators, pumps, air compressors etc. travels through steel construction with ease. It not only makes the rest from hard working day intolerable, but also pollutes area around the ship. The insulation of ship not only protects from fire and limit the heat exchange, but also protects from noise pollution.

To have in mind the ship life cycle, it should be recycleable in highest degree as possible.
